i2CAT will demonstrate two cutting-edge solutions for logistics at SIL2018

Tue, 05/06/2018 - 16:45

i2CAT will participate in SIL Barcelona 2018, the Leading Exhibition for Logistics, Transport, Intralogistics and Supply Chain in Southern Europe. This annual fair, which celebrates this year its 20th edition, will take place next 5-7 June.

The i2CAT Foundation will exhibit two technical demonstrations. The first one is the presentation of a battery-less sensing and monitoring solution for freight traffic goods based on NFC. The solution consists on an identifying RFID tag, composed by an antenna and motherboard, and a small sensor located inside the package which can sense different parameters (temperature, humidity, etc.), provided that the required energy does not exceed 5mW. Additionally, a client app allows for visualisation of all readings registered by the tag and for the management of that information. Through a smartphone equipped with an NFC reader, the operator can interact with the RFID tag, powering it in the process so the internal sensor can read and send the information. Those readings are stored in the tag and can be visualised and managed through the client app, which can administer sessions and permissions for a variety of users in real time and in an agile way. This solution created by i2CAT allows for unlimited reuse of the packaging as well as for easy management of the content without having to alter the exterior.

The second demonstration is the exhibition of an improved version of the i2TRACK system for indoor location with UWB and RFID that was demonstrated at SIL 2017. The i2CAT Foundation continues to bet on the potential of UWB in combination with RFID identification tags to build precise and cost-effective location systems. UWB is a very wide frequency used worldwide, which allows for a robust signal that easily relieves the effect of industrial noise. The new i2TRACK generation is improved with new UWB (DWM1001) modules, which can build tags supporting locations of less than 5cm3 and facilitate months of battery use. The location system will have a total cost of no more than 200€.

The Foundation will be represented in two different booths: the 4.0 zone, where the demonstrations will be exposed and where the i2CAT team will discuss technical aspects of the presented technologies; and another stand, where visitors will be able to find out about the center technologies and its latest developments

i2CAT has extensive knowledge of advanced digital technologies, thanks to more than 15 years of working on international and national projects, and to our experience of working with local companies and public administration. Through our participation in events like SIL Barcelona, i2CAT shows its potential as a technological as a technological partner to promote innovation in the industry sector, offering solutions to real challenges.

If you are visiting the fair, you can find us at Hall 8, Stand number E510!

For yet another year, i2CAT will be present in EuCNC 2018, the European Conference on Networks and Communications, which will take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia on June 18-21. This annual technical conference is focused on communication networks and systems and reaching service and applications. Its main objective is to bring together international researchers to present their latest research results, generally from successive European R&D research projects.

The 5th Generation Wireless Systems is one of the strategic areas of the Foundation, which currently participates in five of the 37 5G European H2020 projects funded by the European Commission and leads the 5GBarcelona project, alongside with Mobile World Capital, Barcelona City Council and the Government of Catalonia, among others.

The i2CAT Foundation will contribute to the conference through the work developed within several 5G research projects: two papers, one presentation, two workshop contributions and a demonstration. One of the accepted papers is entitled “Architecture options for satellite integration into 5G Networks”, and features part of the work developed within the SaT5G project; the other paper is “A 5G Framework for the Next Generation In-Flight Entertainment and Communications”, and shares the work developed within 5G ESSENCE and the ONOFRE-2 projects.

i2CAT will also collaborate in several workshops. A presentation about the 5GCity project will be given by Shuaib Siddiqui, senior researcher at i2CAT at workshop 3, entitled “Multi-provider, multi-vendor, multi-player orchestration: from distributed cloud to edge and fog environments in 5G”. This session is co-organised by the Foundation and its objective is to put in common the results in the area of multi-actor orchestration, fog and edge computing, by strengthening the link between projects, facilitating the exchange of ideas and helping each research group to take advantage of the results produced by others, and aligning towards common goals and milestones, in order to maximise the overall impact.

Another presentation of this project is planned for workshop 6, “5th International Workshop on programmable networks: Demystifying software networks for Vertical Industries”. This seminar aims at bringing together top researchers in the area of software networks under the umbrella of the EU H2020 5G-PPP projects to share their ideas and research results, and hence create an opportunity for synergy with other 5GPPP and H2020 5G projects, taking advantage of the EuCNC 2018 venue that acts as central hub for European research.

Furthermore, i2CAT team will be at the Sat5G booth demoing the project through an exhibition called “SaT5G (Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G): Demonstration of Satellite Integration Towards 5G”. It aims to progress the State-of-the-Art and demonstrate over-the-air selected 5G features and use cases for satellite network integration using existing in-orbit geostationary satellite systems. Pouria Sayyad Khodashenas, another Foundation researcher, will introduce i2CAT work in that stand, too. Finally, the Foundation will lead the demo “5GCity Neutral Hosting”.

The EuCNC 2018 conference will represent an excellent opportunity to showcase the i2CAT expertise in the 5G field and to assess the projects advances in comparison with other research developments.
