Catalonia is a pioneer in Europe in Future Internet and innovation through culture

During this week takes place in Dublin the 10th edition of the "Future Internet Assembly". Organized around the theme "The Future Internet as accelerator of innovation", we will present the project SPECIFI and the European Creative Ring, in which Barcelona is one of the leading cities.

Projects like VISIONAIR and technological communities join the creative and cultural industries to generate innovation in this European project led by the Government in Catalonia, the Barcelona Institute of Culture (ICUB) and i2CAT.

Europe has a new generation of entrepreneurs and people from the world of creativity and culture as digital artists, designers, Wikipedians, fablabbers, etc... which represent an important source of innovation in cities. SPECIFI (Smart Platforms Enabling the Creative Industries for the Future Internet) the European project  seeks to provide to these European urban creative communities access to technologies and solutions offered by the Future Internet fostering the promotion of greater and better interconnection among them and consequently generate innovative services. The Creative Ring is a new platform and community that aims to design new formats for the creation and distribution of cultural contents across Europe based on new technologies.

Creative Ring has been the focus of the meeting held on 7th of May in Dublin entitled "The Creative Ring: Towards Connected Smart and Creative Cities and Citizens.". In parallel with the celebration of the Future Internet Assembly (www.fi-dublin.eu), and as a demonstration activity of the Creative Ring, during the 8th and 9th of May, there will take place a co-creation musical event at European level using broadband networks and with the participation of members of the Taller de Música de Barcelona (violin, guitar and vocals) and musicians from Kortrijk, in the region of Flanders (guitar), Trento (cajón) and Dublin (Irish drum). ICUB has taken the artistic and technical coordination of the event from the Factory of Creation Fabra i Coats working as connection node with the other venues.

Meanwhile, the i2CAT Foundation, organization leading the pilot Barcelona Creative Ring, has coordinated the technological side of the event, providing the countries involved with the equipment and technical stuff needed for the event. It is also relevant that i2CAT attended the FIA presenting research and innovation projects as FIBRE, OFELIA, Fed4FIRE and TV-RING, and has been invited as a speaker at the session "envisioning Future Internet".

The Culture Department from the Generalitat de Catalunya, makes available for the cities involved the use of the infrastructures associated with the Cultural Ring, allowing interaction among multiple creative communities.

SPECIFI (www.specifi.eu) is funded by the European Commission under the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme (CIP) and has a consortium composed by governments, research institutions and companies across Europe: 3 entities of Catalonia, 4 Trento (Italy), 8 Flanders (Belgium), one from Holland and one from Greece. Catalonia participated in this project through the Government of Catalonia, ICUB and i2CAT.

VISIONAIR, funded by the European Commission through the 7th Framework Programme (grant agreement number 262.044) under the Capacities programme, is a project where I2CAT takes part and its aim at the promotion of the use of advanced visualization infrastructure for research and experimentation in different areas. This will be the second transnational cooperation project running under VISIONAIR, in which PSNC (Poland) is giving support.
