The I2CAT Foundation promotes “Augmented Heritage”, a new international platform where the latest augmented reality technologies and heritage converge.

AugmentedHeritage is a point of encounter between the latest technologies and heritage. During the last years, we have seen successful experiences applying innovative technologies as virtual reality and augmented reality in multiple sectors (industry, marketing, health, etc.). The i2CAT Foundation is interested on exploring also its valuable results in areas as heritage, creativity and tourism. As expressed by Sergi Fernandez, i2CAT Audiovisual Unit Director, “We believe on the great potential of Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and other innovative technologies applied to heritage.”

Technical advances will allow increasing the quality of experience of users around heritage; contribute to improving the preservation and restoration techniques, and offer new narratives and perspectives in areas as research, entertainment, education and tourism. The new AugmentedHeritage platform will present the state-of-the-art on these areas, showing the available technologies and examples of its application in heritage and art.

AugmentedHeritage.net is the new website where news, events and calls for papers aligned with AugmentedHeritage topics will allow professionals to be up to date on that field. Special attention has been paid to private companies and research centres, creating a market place section where all the organisations working either on technologies or on solutions and content development, can be showcased and interact with other professionals.

To facilitate the interaction between professionals from the technological, heritage and tourism sectors is one of the aims of AugmentedHeritage and its network. Technical experts, heritage managers, tourism professionals, museum geeks, amateurs… All citizens passionate of Augmented Heritage are invited to join the network and share experiences, latest news and updates.

AugmentedHeritage has been created in the framework of International Augmented Med (I AM), an international cooperation project funded by the European Union aiming to bring together technical experts in multimedia and interactive technologies and stakeholders in tourism promotion. From 2012 to 2015, partners from 7 Mediterranean countries we have been working together to enhance the attractiveness of natural and cultural heritage sites as tourism locations. Enhancements have used a variety of advanced multimedia applications (especially “Augmented Reality” techniques), including cutting-edge interactive techniques.
