The i2CAT Foundation promotes an eInfrastructure for the Culture and Arts at the CineGrid International Workshop

The i2CAT Foundation promotes an eInfrastructure for the Culture and Arts at the CineGrid International Workshop, hold in San Diego, California.

The i2CAT Foundation, represented by David Cuenca, assisted at the CineGrid International Workshop 2012 (9th-12th of December 2012) in San Diego, California. This is the most relevant event made by the international organization of the CineGrid, entity which main purpose is “to build an interdisciplinary community that is focused on the research, development, and demonstration of networked collaborative tools to enable the production, use, preservation, and exchange of very-high-quality digital media over photonic networks.

During the last edition, there were presentations and demonstrations of high interest on different topics like the trend, that have been experimented during the latest years, towards the continuous growing of resolution thanks to the transition from the PAL system to the HD Ready and lately to the Full HD. The introduction of the new 4K standard, with a resolution of 3.840 x 2.160 pixels, which is 4 times bigger than the Full HD, has contributed to certificate this fact. Another example of this trend is related with the main TV industry manufacturers, who strongly supports and impulse the commercialization of the 4K television (every time closer to the main public, due to the reduction of its price). This was verified during the CES2013, the annual fair organized by the Consumer Electronics Association the global referent in the field of consumer electronics, event where new 4K’s TVs where presented. Even so, there is still a long way to go until this format reaches consumers, not only in the physical TV, but also in the form of contents, cameras, etc.

The presence in this event was under the framework of the actions performed by i2CAT for the eIeC project (eInfrastructures for the eCulture), financed by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación. The main objective of the project is to export the idea of getting a new eInfrastructure for arts and culture. This infrastructure will contribute to the promotion of the cultural interchange among countries and the establishment of a socio-cultural and scientific community at global level. The event promoted the necessity of the creation of an infrastructure with this typology among attendees, with representatives of the industry sector, universities and research centres, with whom to collaborate to create the Global Cultural Ring.
