i2CAT works in connected and hybrid television

The December 6 began in the town of Gurb (Barcelona) the testing pilot of the European project TV-RING, led by the i2CAT Foundation. For the pilot, the Foundation has enjoyed the collaboration of TV3 and the company Abertis Telecom. Households participating in the project received a next-generation television that allowed access to services and content created by TV3, especially for this test, which will be used for evaluation.

These tests are aimed at creating advanced scenarios in connected television that the developments of new HbbTV standards facilitate. It has been chosen the town of Gurb because it has an extensive fiber optic network that GuifiNet, telecommunications operator and collaborator of the pilot, has been unfolding in recent years.

For the testing, the three Catalan partners yielded, for the duration of the pilot, a next-generation television in each of the 21 homes that had offered to participate in voluntary testing. In return, these families acquired the commitment to participate in activities of evaluation and monitoring of the operation of the applications developed during the pilot. It is expected that once the pilots is finished, the tested services will be made publicly available to the public that have a television at home HbbTV 1.5 capable.

The TV-RING project is financed by the European Community through the CIP ICT PSP program, and will last for thirty months. The project is led by i2CAT a research center in Internet technologies in Catalonia. In the pilot Catalan, other partners carried out pilot projects Land Berlin-Brandenburg Brandenburg (Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg) and the Netherlands (Stichting Nederlandse Omroep Publieke).

Parallel to the pilot, project results will be presented at the conference "Connected TV", organized by the consortia of ConTVLAB and TV-RING projects, and which will be held in Zaragoza next day January 20, 2015.

The conference aims to bring together specialized professionals to discuss the state of the sector in Spain, to meet the users perception about new services, to present similar international initiatives and to demonstrate interactive applications, as well as two parallel sessions oriented to applications development and studies of new opportunities for the sector. The session also aims to promote synergies among the participants to work in this field.
