Join us on June 26 for a PRE-HACK event: idea pitching, team building, mentoring and more at the Design Hub Barcelona

APPS&CULTURA promotes the creation of mobile apps to improve access to Barcelona’s cultural offerings and heritage.

Barcelona, June 25, 2014.-‐ The Institute of Culture of Barcelona (ICUB) has launched the APPS&CULTURA Challenge. The challenge is designed to realize the full potential in the mobile ecosystem in Barcelona for the benefit of the creative sector and all citizens. It combines the city’s culture with the talent of mobile developers and people with ideas.

APPS&CULTURA is a free and open process in which participants will receive the continued support of specialized online mentors who will help them in the process of transforming their ideas into finished mobile apps. The challenge is open to developers, designers and other professionals, as well as anyone with a good idea for mobile application. The challenge is part of Apps4BcnPRO, Barcelona’s ecosystem of apps.

The Design Hub Barcelona will host a PRE‐HACK event on June 26th

On June 26 at 6pm, a PRE-‐HACK event at the Design Hub Barcelona, attendees will be able to formulate ideas and outline the mobile applications they would like to develop during the summer with the support of the challenge mentors specalized in cultural issues and app development. Registration is free following this link.

10 apps will be selected to pitch and compete for up to 8500€ on a final event on September, 22nd. Three winners will receive cash prizes (8,500 euros in total) and a guaranteed spot to an acceleration phase designed to mature the apps, obtain investment and achieve commercial sustainability.

APPS&CULTURA has also joined Europeana, a new European project that promotes the reuse of cultural heritage resources of Europe through a platform that provides access to over 30 million digitized cultural heritage objects from Europe’s libraries, museums, archives and audiovisual collections. All APPS&CULTURA participants will have access to all of Europeana’s materials.

Inés Garriga, ICUB’s Creativity and Innovation director, highlights that the APPS&CULTURA challenge "aims to strengthen the complicity of creative and technology communities to promote the creation of mobile applications to facilitate customized discovery of artistic and cultural offerings, and to make Barcelona’s cultural heritage more accessible to everyone, including tourists." In this second edition of APPS&CULTURA, "we added some new features like a collaboration with Europeana and an acceleration phase to make the competition more attractive," says Garriga.

Last year’s call for APPS&CULTURA yielded the creation of 22 mobile applications. The winning app, Meet2go saw their concept to bring together like-‐ minded people to go to concerts and festivals validated. They now have expanded their web app to Iphone and Android. The social app Unique Visitors was awarded the prize for the most innovative concept and was also the app more voted by the public. Unique Visitors lets people create, share and view itineraries for visiting museums.

APPS&CULTURA challenge is part of the City of Barcelona APPS4BCN/LAB program. The program is aimed at connecting different areas of the city with the development opportunities offered by mobile applications, all within the context of Barcelona as the mobile capital.
