FiCloud Conference 2014

TRESCIMO research presented in the FI Cloud conference held in Barcelona

Research results developed by the Ubiquitous Internet Technology Unit (UITU) at i2CAT were presented at the2nd International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud) held from August 27th to 29th in Barcelona.

The presented paper proposes an enhanced architecture to interconnect an M2M platform to delay tolerant networks in order to get data from sensor devices with strong energy restrictions. The biggest advantage of the proposed architecture is that the costs to deploy a sensor collection platform are minimized, since only few sensor gateways aboard moving vehicles, like buses, need to be deployed. This novel paradigm is expected to drastically decrease the deployment costs of future Smart City platforms. In addition, in terms of performance, the proposed architecture is expected to reduce the energy consumption of the sensors in listening mode by a factor of four orders of magnitude thanks to the use of a novel wake-up radio technology. 

This work is the result of collaboration between Fraunhofer FOKUS, TU Berlin, I2CAT and the Wireless Networks Group from the UPC. As a continuation of this work, and within the framework of the TRESCIMO project, in 2015 this architecture will be demonstrated by means of a pilot deployed in the city of Sant Vicenç dels Horts.
