Research Area

One of the objectives of i2CAT is to bridge the gap between Academia and Industry by defining, promoting and executing research, development and innovation projects involving relevant stakeholders. Within this scenario, i2CAT’s Research Area has as the main objective to strengthen and increase the know-how of the institution and its collaborators in the field of Future Networks and technologies and to use such knowledge as the basis for future innovation projects in the different areas and units comprising i2CAT. Such effort is also complementary to the internal research activities that the different areas and units develop as part of their own national and European research projects.

Over the years, i2CAT has established strong collaborations with a number of research groups from three Catalan universities (UPC, URL and UPF) and several companies. From such efforts, different research projects have been developed in the fields of the following technological areas: optical networks, multimedia in distributed systems, wireless and sensor networks and Future Internet architectures in general.

As a result of these projects, the Research Area has generated a relevant number of publications in magazines, journals and conferences, testbed prototypes, field trials and patent submissions.


The scientific objectives and activity of the Research Area are driven by the know-how acquired from past research projects and others which are of strategic interest due to their activity in the Future Networks architecture redefinition. i2CAT develops research in several fields such as: social Internet, Internet of Media, Internet of Things and the Internet, as network of networks. Some of the specific themes tackled are:

  • Dynamic and autonomous service composition in future media networks.
  • Context-aware and content-aware networking.
  • New switching and routing paradigms for fixed and mobile networks.
  • Network resources assignment algorithms.
  • New and future network architectures, including role-based (RBA) and service oriented networking (SOA).
  • Recursive internetworking architecture (RINA).
  • Mobile-fixed convergence, service and infrastructure virtualization.
  • Media, high-definition, standards and ontologies for eHealth applications.

The main objective of the Research Area is to foster the research activities internal to the own area and also of the units and other areas of i2CAT. Thus, one of the objectives is to align the goals of the strategic internal research of the Foundation with the research performed by the areas aiming at increasing the productivity, visibility and impact of the results. More specifically, the Research Area aims to:

  • Increment the scientific productivity of the institution with breakthrough research.
  • Boost the internationalization of the research activities.
  • Link the internal research to the strategies of i2CAT and of the area innovation requirements.
  • Optimize the research structure of i2CAT and foster research within the areas and units of the institution.
  • Optimize the knowledge transfer between i2CAT researchers and research groups from university.
  • Complement and improve the training of our researchers.
