Description

This project has obtained funding in the INNPACTO 2011 call (MICINN), and the development is done collaboratively between Quantech (leader), CIMNE, UPC and i2CAT. The technological implementation of the project is led by developers of the DANA area.

The project's objective is to implement Cloud SaaS (Software as a Service) architecture on which to migrate and deploy the simulation software design and optimization of metal forming processes or cast steel and light alloy that Quantech currently sells in 'desktop' licensed mode. The resulting product of the project will provide the software in SaaS mode, reducing costs and increasing its penetration in the industrial sector.

This project has a clear market orientation, since the result should be a commercial product that Quantech will exploit.

Innovation

Technology and business objectives:

  • Implement improvements in existing programs to be faster and able to run on machines with other operating systems.
  • Develop programs to run on cluster computing and server farms.
  • Improve user interfaces to optimize workflows and simplify the process of calculation.
  • Develop client - server communication systems for pre- and post-calculation processes.

Industrial objectives:

  • Increase the companies’ competitiveness in the sector as a whole by offering better and more economical design tools and process optimization.
  • Increase production companies knowledge on their production processes.
  • Improve the quality of pieces and prevent defects before they occur.
  • Reduce the cost of designing products and tools and reduce the time needed to implement a production process.
  • Reduce the risk involved in the production process.

Scientific objectives:

  • Establish basis for the development of new lines of R & D applied to the productive sector.
  • Transfer existing technologies to market in the area of SaaS services, distributed computing and telecommunications.
  • Validate existing modern techniques and new developments in these areas.

Sales and marketing objectives:

  • Change the business model of selling software for the current SaaS services.
  • Facilitate and improve national and international distribution of software products for the industry.
  • Reduce development costs and focus on specific tasks teams.
  • Reduce the cost of software distribution.
  • Improve customer support, stop being so dependent on distributors.
  • Avoid software piracy.
Problematic

The simulation. The use of simulation tools and optimization of processes does not have much penetration in Spain yet. This is partly due to the large investment needed to start using them, both in purchasing the licenses and in training qualified personnel needed to take full advantage of the tools.

The capacity. However, local industry now needs to increase its capabilities to be more competitive internationally. We need a change in design and production models to meet the high international competition.

It's time to increase skills and improve processes, but at the same time the crisis has taken its toll on the sector and small and medium enterprises do not have recourses to launch and implement these processes for improvement.

It is for this reason that we intend to facilitate access to companies in the automotive sector to this technology. This requires reducing significantly the initial cost for SMEs, improving workflow and providing more computing power to big business.

The business model. There are calculation and optimization technologies in the market, but neither the offer the competitive advantages we propose in this project nor the option to use a new business model. Existing programs are expensive for SMEs and do not offer the option of scaling the calculation to large servers for big companies with important calculating needs.

The speed. The proposed system will have the ability to offer as many cores of calculation as the customer needs depending on the available timeframe to perform the simulation. This will drastically reduce the computation time and therefore the company’s design processes.

Piracy. Finally, we must take into account the problem of piracy. This problem is well known due to media coverage by the film and music industries but it also affects the software industry. This change in business model (selling licenses to use online as a service) mitigates the problem of illegal downloads as it will not be necessary to install a program or purchase a license to use these tools. Finally, it is important to point out that our business model will facilitate the internationalization of the product, as the system runs in the internet and can be used by companies both in Spain and abroad, facilitating the sector growth.
