Next Generation Network de sistemas embebidos en la infraestructura de iluminación eléctrica



Public lighting infrastructure in a city forms a full grid that covers practically the total area of cities, including facilities, industrial areas, utilities, etc. Therefore, EFFICity aims at deepening the concept of Smart City, articulating a new generation network infrastructure to take the advantage of embedding lighting and services that facilitate the efficient management of cities.

Taking the advantage of existing networks, following the philosophy of the Smart Grid, is on reducing operating costs. In addition, public lighting, such as streetlights, is extended to a greater or lesser degree, universally. Thus, a solution that uses a network of lighting a city can be applied to virtually everyone.

  • General Objective: Create an embedded intelligence service network in the public lighting infrastructure.
  • Specific Objectives:
    • To structure a Smart Grid through BPL (Broadband over Power Lines)
    • To develop a streetlight that integrates hardware and the IP services software deployed in the network.
    • To integrate IP services to form a mesh that makes the city management smarter.
    • To design and develop a SOA network management platform.
    • Project co-financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation through the announcement INNPACTO 2010

Thanks to the new generation network, which aims to develop EFFICity, you can increase efficiency in resource management: energy, assistance services, security, etc. In addition, the solution to be developed, taking into account the interrelationship between the essential systems of the city, through the axis of the public lighting infrastructure, you can get a smart “system of systems”. That is, a network interfaces to increase efficiency and resolve potential threats to the long-term sustainability.


Resources in cities are limited and, to meet successfully the challenges we face, it should be considered the relationship between the problems that affect vital systems of the city. It is a process, not an instant transformation, but the first step requires a change in the way of doing things and a break with the past.

This means that the responsible municipal management must develop an integrated planning, identifying what their core competencies and building on the knowledge and experience of others where necessary.

Technological advances have in itself an increasing monitoring of critical aspects of the operation and development of the city that policy-makers could not measure or above change. This manipulation generated, for example, new data on the efficiency of water distribution systems or transport in the city. In addition it allows interconnecting different local systems, enabling information flow between them. Thanks to the monitoring and interconnection of the essential systems of the city, the information obtained can be used to take intelligent and qualified decisions.
