OFTALKOLDA: Deployment of telemedicine platform in Senegal

The OFTALKOLDA Project is part of the collaboration initiated in 2009 between the Area of Health and Dependence of i2CAT Foundation and the Ferreruela Sanfeliu Foundation (FFS), with the aim to improve specialized health care in Senegal, through the use of Internet and the new technologies.

The main objective of this project is to enhance the ophthalmology service in the Kolda region, through the use of a telemedicine platform to connect referral hospitals in Catalonia and Senegal with regional health centers. Through this system, specialists and ophthalmologists will be able to analyze case images from patients in these isolated areas, thus supporting local practitioners for a better health care service given to the population.

In order to achieve the objectives of the project, a work plan has been established, consisting of several stages: first, gathering the requirements on the real scenario; second, developing the technology platform that collects those requirements; and finally, implementing and evaluating the results. Given that, the platform consists of a BlazeDS application with two parts: a Flex client (front-end), a J2EE Web application (back-end), and MySQL to store data.

The benefits of using the platform will improve the quality of medical services available to people in the region of Kolda (Senegal). This web platform will allow an ophthalmologist to a referral hospital to remotely treat patients presenting to other regional hospitals, which are attended by skilled medical staff.

The project responds to the need for tele-diagnose eye diseases in the region of Kolda, given the lack of specialists in the area, as well as to support technicians who work in ophthalmology service through training and improving their technical capabilities.
