PHOSPHORUS is a European project focused on the supplying of optical on-demand network resources (both in immediate availability and in advance), end-to-end and through multiple heterogenic domains, all of which interconnect the different advanced optical communication networks from across Europe. The network concept of the project enables the applications to be conscious of the GRID resources present in their ecosystem. Furthermore, the project enables the coexistence of different resource provisioning systems (NRPS –Network Resource Provisioning System) and a new Grid-GMPLS control plan, for the Grid applications and the Middleware to transparently interoperate. Additionally, Phosphorus aims to achieve interoperability with other similar initiatives from all over the world, such as AutoBAHN from GÉANT2 or IDC from Internet2 and the compatibility with the future supply standard interfaces, such as the Network Service Interface of the Open Grid Forum.

The first goal of this project is to face different technological challenges in order to provide point to point or point to multipoint connections, through various and heterogeneous domains under demand. At the same time, the PHOSPHORUS project will interconnect different optical test-beds around Europe and North America. In order to reach this objective, connections facilitated by the respective local NREN's will be used , as well as the GLIF infrastructure (Global Lambda Integrated Facility). In addition to the interconnection of different networks, it is also important to note the existence of different management systems such as: GMPLS, UCLP, DRAC and ARGON. Moreover, the PHOSPHORUS project will also carry out its activities on a multi-vendor environment.

 

Test-beds interconnection structures

 

The second objective of the PHOSPHORUS project is to develop and improve the integration between the Grid middleware and applications and transport networks; this will be possible by working at three layers. The service layer will provide extensions to the Grid middleware and different APIs in order to expose and reserve GRID computing resources. The network provisioning layer will modify the Network Resource Provisioning Systems already present (NRPS) with the objective to adapt them to the context of the project. As a consequence a set of interfaces between the NRPS will be implemented that will allow full interoperability between NRPSs in a multi-domain and multi-vendor environment. The control plane will also contribute with some improvements to the existing GMPLS control plane, with the objective to integrate optical resources into GRID platforms (G2MPLS, GRID GMPLS).

The third and fourth objective of the PHOSPHORUS project is to study and evaluate the resource management and scheduling algorithms. This will be done thanks to the implementation of solutions previously simulated using a simulator created in this project. This project will also disseminate its conclusions, experiences, tools and middleware to NRENs, its users and super computing centres.

Benefits

This project has enabled the interconnection of i2CAT’s network with the main provisioning optical resource networks present in both Europe and North America. Phosphorus enables the signalling between different domains and the creation of a totally innovative GMPLS control plan with extensions to the GRID.

 

Problematic

A new generation of scientific applications is emerging that couples scientific instruments, data and high-end computing resources distributed on a global scale. Many of the applications have requirements of one or more of these constraints: determinism (e.g. guaranteed QoS), shared data spaces, large transfer of data, and latency requirements that are often achievable only through dedicated optical bandwidth.

The advent of high capacity optical networking will soon provide the raw capacity to carry vast amounts of data, but software tools and frameworks addressing end-to-end user and application-level access as well as provisioning-on-demand of such bandwidth need to be developed in coordination with other resources, such as CPU and storage.

In response to the above requirements, PHOSPHORUS will address some of the key technical challenges to enable on-demand e2e network services across multiple domains. The PHOSPHORUS network concept and test-bed will make applications aware of their complete Grid resources (computational and networking) environment and capabilities, and able to make dynamic, adaptive and optimized use of heterogeneous network infrastructures connecting various high-end resources.
