Description

The project consists of obtaining a system based on RFID and Printed Electronics technology, to provide a solution to the current needs of the hospitals in the areas of management and location of patients. It will be develop an application to display the location of objects, wheter they are people or materials within the premises of a hospital, from the information received from a active RFID technology-based positioning middleware.

The overall objective of this project is the development of a biomedical personal system to allow locating and tracking a person while their biomedical signals are monitored in indoor environment. To achieve such functionality it will be developed a small bracelet by combining Printed Electronics technology and RFID technology, that will be able to communicate with a wireless network deployed in the indoor environment. This device will be in charge of receiving all the information of the biomedical sensors that the patient requires, which will be sent directly to the HIS (Hospital Information System) or to a complementary information system. Delivery will be made by deploying a wireless mesh features net, that means self-configurable and easy expansion and scalability. Once the information is centralized, the system will be able to develop services, whether real-time or post ones, after applying certain calculations.

Innovation

The most important technological innovation to be developed in this project is given by the introduction PRINTED ELECTRONICS technology for the development of RFID solutions, applied in indoor location systems. Thus, from a technological standpoint, we highlight three developments:

  • Active RFID technology.
  • Printed Electronics Technology.
  • Indoor location system.

From a functional point of view, the system will be characterized by the following features:

  • Location: hospital patients may be located in a perimeter previously outlined, with a high accuracy of 2-3 meters.
  • Traceability: the system will be able to provide traceability of the different places and the time where the patient has passed, in order to know in detail the times and where he stayed during the visit to the center.
  • Monitoring: the constants of patients can be monitored in real time to prevent possible actions, since the system incorporates an alarm if necessary. These constants can be discrete and at an early stage of development they will be restricted to a noncritical and noninvasive constants.
Problematic

Currently, identification and tracking systems used in healthcare environment are based on the barcode system. With this solution is not possible to perform a process of localization of patients and users within various departments, in order to improve management and efficiency of use and expand, ultimately, the quality of care.

Considering the fact that the introduction of Information Technology and Communications (ICT) in health care sector has greatly improved the internal processes of centers and external tracking systems (for example the GPS) do not work in indoor environments, we are at an ideal time to develop a solution to the mentioned problems by developing a positioning system or indoor location based on RFID technology.
